Towns bat influx eases
The increase in bats has been attributed to the summer weather, but research also shows there is evidence that changes in temperature and humidity can influence bats' behaviour.
One study showed that bats from a site on the western coast of Victoria have become less active over the years. The results led the researchers to believe that bats were moving from the nearby inland wetlands which are home to wetlands crocodiles and native fish to an area of fresh water.
Bats, however, do not hibernate, meaning that hibernation might not affect their populations or their ability to move.
Another study suggests that warmer temperatures may mean bats are migrating to warmer latitudes in order to find a more diverse food source.
A research team, which included ecologists and researchers at the University of Melbourne, found bats in the Southern Plains of Australia are less active in the summer compared to the Northern Plains, especially when it comes to predation.
Bats are more susceptible to predation by larger predators like small game, but the researchers do note the Southern Plains has a higher ratio of species of bats than other areas of the country.
However, there does remain a question mark over the long-term impact of the bats on humans.
"Some say we should leave them alone, " said Dr Sarah McCauley, one of the authors of the paper in Australian Nature.
"But some of them feel threatened, " she added.

Some have argued that if bats are the only game left to humans, they may still be safe under certain circumstances.
"You can take care of your home without the threat of a large predator, which might also mean you have some choice of food and other things to enjoy, but that is not always the case, " explained Professor Rob Goudelock, of the University of Melbourne. |
